Thesis: The acclamation of Jesus as He Who brings Israel into the Kingdom of David makes Mark's "point": Jesus of Nazareth is recognized in the heart of the nation as the Christ.
Introduction: In our last study we focused upon Mark's presentation as the All-Knowing One Who fits the prophecy of "thy King cometh unto thee ... riding upon a donkey's colt".
This evening we are going to look into how he finalizes his argument that "Hosanna" brings Jesus to the "Christ Identity" according to Daniel's prophecies.
- I. "And When They Are Drawing Near Into Jerusalem Into Bethphage And Into Bethany Toward The Mountain Of The Olives..."
- II. "He Is Sending Two Of His Disciples..."
- III. "He Is Saying To Them..."
- IV. "They Went Away And Found..." (That Every Detail Came To Pass As He Had Said).
- A. The historical record is straightforward as a particular illustration of the details of the "knowing" of Jesus.
- 1. They "went away" (to the unnamed village identified by Jesus).
- 2. They "found a foal" (the young and never gentled offspring of a donkey).
- 3. Their discovery was of a "foal" which "had been tied" (Perfect Passive Participle Masculine -- i.e. a young stud) close toward a door outside upon a the street.
- 4. At this point Mark switches to the Present Tense: "...they are untying him (Masculine Accusative)".
- 5. And some of those who "had stood there" began to say (Imperfect Indicative plural) to them, "What are you doing (Present Indicative) untying (Present Participle) the foal?"
- 6. "...and they said to them just as The Jesus said, and they permitted (Aorist Indicative) them.
- 7. "And they are bearing the foal to The Jesus..."
- B. This is a record of a deliberately constructed event, beginning with the tying of the foal before the door of a house.
- 1. This is occurring on the Sunday before Passover.
- 2. This is clearly a leading up to Passover, the celebration of the deliverance of the nation from Egypt.
- V. The next actions are presented in the Present Tense beginning with: "they are casting upon it their garments , and He sat upon (Aorist Indicative) it.
- A. And many spread (Aorist Indicative) their garments into the way (road), and others "a bed of branches cut from the fields".
- B. And those "going before" (Present Participle) and those "following" (Present Participle) "were crying out...(Imperfect Indicative)" the words of Psalm 118:25-26.
- 1. "Hosanna" ("Deliver Us We Pray").
- 2. "Having Been Blessed (Perfect Passive Participle) [is] The One Coming (Present Participle) in [the] name of [the] Lord".
- 3. "Having Been Blessed [is] the coming kingdom of our father David".
- 4. "Hosanna in the highest regions" (Plural superlative, Adjective Neuter).
- C. The immediate context of these words in the Psalm include...
- 1. A declaration regarding the "Lord" Who has "become my salvation".
- 2. An immediately following statement about "the stone that the builders rejected becoming the chief corner [stone]".
- 3. The familiar "This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it."
- 4. Then the "Hosanna" (118:25) followed by an appeal for Him to send prosperity and the "blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord."
- 5. After this, Mark records a follow-up that is not a direct quote: "Blessed be the coming kingdom of our father David" which has its roots in the Davidic Covenant in 2 Samuel 7 where God covenants to "build David a house".
- 6. Then, the conclusion which is not directly in the Old Testament, but has a certain root in Daniel 7:18 and 22 where the prophecy is that the saints will "take possession of the kingdom".
